Paisu Pok Lake Sulawesi: The Clearest Lake In The World?

Paisu Pok Lake

There are some places you see online and immediately think, surely that can’t actually look like that in real life.

Paisu Pok Lake was one of those places.

Hidden away in the remote Banggai Islands of Central Sulawesi, this incredible lake has become famous for its almost impossibly clear water. On a calm day, you can look straight through the surface and see the rocks, trees and lakebed many metres below you.

It genuinely looks more like glass than water.

And after seeing videos of it online, we knew we had to make the long journey to see it for ourselves.

What we weren’t expecting was just how much more beautiful it would be in person.

How To Get To Paisu Pok Lake

Paisupok Lake Sulawesi Indonesia

Paisu Pok Lake is not somewhere you simply stumble across while travelling around Indonesia.

It’s deep in the Banggai Islands, one of the more remote parts of Central Sulawesi, and getting there takes some effort.

We travelled all the way from Bali, flying from Denpasar to Makassar, then onwards from Makassar to Luwuk in Central Sulawesi.

From Luwuk, we took a ferry for around four hours across to Pelabuhan Laut Salakan on Peleng Island.

After arriving in Salakan, there’s still a long trip ahead. We then travelled for approximately 2.5–3 hours by car to reach Paisu Pok Lake.

It’s a long way.

But there’s a saying that the harder somewhere is to reach, the more rewarding it can be.

Paisu Pok Lake is a pretty good example of that.

If you’re planning this journey yourself, we’d recommend building plenty of flexibility into your itinerary. Flights and ferries around Central Sulawesi can be delayed, and transport doesn’t always run to the precise schedule you might be used to in more developed tourist destinations.

If you haven’t already, we’d also recommend reading our Banggai Islands Travel Guide, where we go into much more detail about getting from Bali to the Banggai Islands, including the flights, ferry and where we stayed in Salakan.

Our Journey To Paisu Pok Lake

We woke up at around 4am in Salakan.

The first thing we could hear was the call to prayer echoing through the town as we got ready for the long journey ahead.

It was still completely dark outside.

We climbed into the car and settled in for what would be a roughly three-hour drive.

Naturally, Beth used the opportunity to get a very solid nap in.

As we got closer to the lake, the landscape became increasingly remote. This is a part of Indonesia that still feels worlds away from the country’s better-known tourist destinations.

Paisu Pok Lake Banggai Islands

Eventually, we arrived. And it was raining.

Not exactly the conditions we’d imagined for seeing one of the clearest lakes in the world.

But, weirdly, it made the place even more atmospheric.

There was mist hanging around the trees, clouds sitting low over the jungle and barely a sound around us.

We were also completely alone.

No crowds. No tour groups.

Just us, the rain and this incredibly remote lake.

We were already blown away. Except…

We hadn’t actually seen Paisu Pok Lake yet.

We Thought We’d Already Found The Lake

This is one of our favourite moments from the whole experience.

When we first got out of the car, we looked across and saw what appeared to be an unbelievably clear turquoise lake.

We were like:

“Oh my goodness. It’s incredible.”

Except it wasn’t Paisu Pok Lake.

It was the sea.

The coastline around this part of the Banggai Islands is so ridiculously clear and turquoise that we had completely mistaken the ocean for the famous lake we’d travelled all this way to see.

So, if anything, that gives you an idea of just how beautiful the surrounding area is.

We continued walking towards the actual lake.

And then we saw it.

Seeing Paisu Pok Lake For The First Time

Beth freediving at Paisu Pok Lake

Even though we’d seen countless videos and photos beforehand, nothing really prepared us for seeing Paisu Pok Lake in person.

Beth had some idea of what to expect. Denz didn’t.

And the reaction was immediate. It was absolutely breathtaking.

At first, the lake wasn’t quite as clear as usual due to the rain.

The rain was falling onto the surface, creating tiny ripples across the water and stopping us from seeing all the way through.

So we sat down under a little shelter, grabbed some cookies for breakfast and waited.

And slowly… The rain slowed down.

The surface of the lake became calmer.

The ripples started disappearing.

And then the water became completely still.

It looked like glass.

The Clearest Water We’ve Ever Seen

Beth and Denz underwater at Paisu Pok Lake

As the surface became calm, we could suddenly see straight through the water.

And we mean straight through it.

Rocks. Trees. The lakebed.

Every tiny detail was visible.

Even when the water became much deeper, it still looked almost completely transparent.

We’ve travelled to some incredible places around the world, but we’d never experienced anything quite like this.

It genuinely looked like someone had taken a giant sheet of glass and placed it over a jungle lake.

That transformation was  particularly incredible because we’d arrived in the rain thinking we might not even get to see the famous clarity we’d travelled for.

Instead, we watched it slowly reveal itself in front of us.

And because we’d arrived so early, we had the entire lake to ourselves.

That made it feel even more surreal.

The Famous Orange Boat

Boat on Paisu Pok Lake Sulawesi

If you’ve seen photos of Paisu Pok Lake online, there’s a good chance you’ve seen the little orange wooden boat.

It’s probably one of the most recognisable images from the lake.

Obviously, we had to get in.

After the rain stopped, Beth climbed into the boat while Denz got the drone ready.

The boat had collected quite a bit of rainwater, so before setting off we had to bail it out with a little plastic container.

Nothing quite says adventure travel like emptying a tiny orange boat before paddling across one of the clearest lakes on Earth.

Once it was ready, Beth slowly paddled out towards the middle.

And seeing the lake from the boat was even more incredible.

The further she went, the deeper the water became.

Yet we could still see straight down.

It almost created the sensation of floating above a huge drop.

If you’re someone who’s nervous around heights, it’s a very strange feeling because your brain knows you’re sitting on the surface of a lake, but your eyes are telling you that you’re hovering above a massive underwater landscape.

Denz had his turn too, and we both agreed that it was one of the most surreal experiences we’d ever had.

Swimming In Paisu Pok Lake

Beth and Denz freediving at Paisu Pok Lake

Of course, we couldn’t travel all this way without getting into the water.

Once we’d finished paddling around, it was time to experience Paisu Pok from underneath the surface.

The water was noticeably cooler than the sea around Indonesia, which isn’t particularly surprising given that this is a freshwater lake.

One thing we’d definitely recommend keeping in mind is that freshwater doesn’t give you the same buoyancy as seawater.

If you’re not a confident swimmer, don’t assume that you’ll float as easily as you would in the ocean.

For confident swimmers, however, getting into the lake is an incredible experience.

Beth spent some time freediving beneath the surface, and the visibility was extraordinary.

Looking back up towards the surface from underwater, everything still looked completely crystal clear.

It felt like swimming inside a giant piece of glass.

The photographs barely do it justice, and truthfully, neither do our words.

When Is The Best Time To Visit Paisu Pok Lake?

Paisupok Lake Sulawesi Indonesia

Based on our experience, we’d recommend getting there as early as possible.

We arrived at around 6:30am, just as the lake was opening, and we had the entire place to ourselves.

That made the experience incredibly peaceful.

The lake’s famous clarity is particularly spectacular when the water is completely calm.

Rain doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve ruined your visit, either.

In fact, our experience was almost the opposite.

When we first arrived, the rain made the lake look mysterious and atmospheric.

Then, as the rain stopped, we watched the surface gradually become calmer until the incredible clarity appeared.

So don’t necessarily panic if you wake up to bad weather.

Give it some time.

You might get lucky.

How Long Do You Need At Paisu Pok Lake?

Paisu Pok Lake

We’d recommend allowing at least a few hours if you’re making the journey all the way out here.

We could have stayed much longer.

There is something incredibly peaceful about simply sitting beside the lake, watching the water and taking in the jungle surrounding you.

If you’re travelling such a long way to reach Paisu Pok, we’d also strongly recommend giving yourself enough time in the Banggai Islands rather than trying to squeeze everything into one rushed day.

The journey itself is a big part of the adventure, and there are plenty of other incredible places to explore nearby.

Paisu Pok Lake Tours

Paisu Pok Lake is VERY remote! It takes a lot of planning to visit. If you want to take the stress out of the planning you can check out this great tour which can actually take up to 4 people for the same price!

Where We Stayed

For our visit to Paisu Pok Lake, we stayed in Salakan, where we had based ourselves after arriving by ferry from Luwuk.

🏨 Wisma Alprend Salakan

Salakan makes a useful base for exploring this part of the Banggai Islands, particularly if you’re arriving by ferry at Pelabuhan Laut Salakan.

We’d recommend staying locally rather than trying to rush back to another part of the islands after visiting Paisu Pok.

There are also some lovely local places to eat and grab a coffee in Salakan, including Kopi Teman, which we really enjoyed.

Is Paisu Pok Lake Worth Visiting?

Paisu Pok Lake drone Sulawesi

Absolutely.

Without hesitation.

In fact, we loved it so much that we came back the following day.

Yes, it takes a long time to reach.

Yes, getting to the Banggai Islands requires a little more planning than your average Indonesian holiday.

And yes, the journey to Paisu Pok itself is several hours from Salakan.

But this is exactly why we think it’s worth doing.

There are places in Indonesia that are beautiful but incredibly busy.

Paisu Pok felt completely different.

When we arrived, there was nobody else there.

Just us, the jungle, the rain and this unbelievably clear lake.

And when the rain finally stopped and the water transformed into glass, it genuinely felt like we’d discovered somewhere completely untouched.

We’ve seen some incredible places during our travels, but Paisu Pok Lake is genuinely up there with the most beautiful.

If you’re willing to make the journey into the remote Banggai Islands, put this one very high on your list.

We’d do the three-hour drive all over again in a heartbeat.

Actually… we did. Because it was just that good.

Big Love

Beth and Denz
