Twin Lagoon Coron

Where Is The Twin Lagoon Located

The Twin Lagoon is a breathtaking location situated on Coron Island in the province of Palawan, Philippines. It is part of the Calamian Group of Islands, a stunning archipelago known for its limestone cliffs, crystal clear waters, and vibrant marine life.

The lagoon itself is nestled within the rugged karst landscapes of Coron Island, hidden away from the open sea and accessible through entrances carved into the limestone cliffs. This secluded location, combined with the unique geological formations and turquoise lagoons, makes the Twin Lagoon one of the most sought-after destinations for travelers exploring the natural marvels of Palawan.

How Do You Get To The Twin Lagoon?

To reach the Twin Lagoon, you need to join an island-hopping tour from the town of Coron or pay for a private tour.

The reason you need to make your way by boat to the Twin Lagoon is because it is located on Coron Island. Coron island is solely inhabited by the indigenous Tagbanua tribe. The Tagbanua are one of the oldest ethnic groups in the Philippines and no one else is allowed to live on Coron Island. The Tagbanua also help to keep the Twin Lagoons Clean, how cool!

Can You Swim In The Twin Lagoon

Yes, you can definitely swim in the Twin Lagoon. In fact, swimming is one of the main activities and highlights of visiting this stunning location. Here are some key details about swimming in the Twin Lagoon: The Twin Lagoon consists of two separate lagoons separated by a narrow limestone cliff. The lagoons are filled with clear, blue-green waters perfect for swimming.

Barracuda Lake, Underwater

To get between the two lagoons, you can swim through a small underwater passage/cave in the separating cliff at low tide or use the wooden stairs built over the rocks at high tide.

The water in the first lagoon is salt water from the sea, while the second lagoon contains a mixture of saltwater and freshwater flowing in from underground.

Swimming and exploring both lagoons by going back and forth between them is an incredible thrill and fun, but be sure you are a confident swimmer if you are attempting this without a life jacket.

Fear not though, if you are not a confident swimmer, your tour operator will be able to give you a life jacket so you can chill and explore the Twin Lagoon at your own pace!

How Deep Is The Twin Lagoon

The depth of the Twin Lagoon varies massively. In some parts it is very shallow but in others it can be very deep. It is highly advisable to wear a life jacket if you are not a confident swimmer and your tour company can provide these.

Is The Twin Lagoon Dangerous

The answer is it can be but not for the reasons you might think…

Brackish Water: Be Aware!

The water in one of the Twin Lagoons is brackish! This is a mix of salt and fresh water and is, therefore, much less dense than seawater. Why be aware, you ask? Well, this essentially means you are much less buoyant in the water therefore it can be harder to swim and float. If you are at all in doubt, take a life jacket! There are plenty provided for free on the day!

For Snorkelers:
If you like to dive down and explore underwater, be aware that you will find it a lot easier to dive down, but… it will also be a lot more work coming back up 😉. Even if you are a strong swimmer, it is advisable to take a life-vest. If you want to have a swim underwater, you can slip the vest off and then swim back up to it afterwards! This allows you to rest as treading water is much harder in brackish water than in the ocean!

Entrance Fee For The Twin Lagoon

Yes, visiting the Twin Lagoon in Coron comes with an entrance fee. When we visited, you were required to pay 200 Philippine pesos per person, which equates to approximately £3. However, bear in mind that this fee may change over time. If you have arranged a private boat tour, this fee must be paid directly to your boat crew upon arrival at the Twin Lagoon. However, for those joining a group tour package, the entrance fee is typically included in the overall tour cost, so you won’t need to worry about it!

The Twin Lagoon in Coron is known for its stunning natural beauty and unique geological formation. As mentioned, it consists of two lagoons separated by a narrow limestone cliff, creating a breathtaking scenery of crystal-clear blue-green waters surrounded by towering cliffs.

Twin Lagoon Coron. Coron Travel Guides.

The main highlights that make the Twin Lagoon famous are:

  1. The ability to swim or kayak between the two lagoons, either by climbing over a wooden staircase built on the limestone wall or swimming through an underwater passage that connects the lagoons during low tide.
  2. The vibrant blue-green hues of the water, created by the mixing of fresh underground water and warm seawater, creating a mesmerizing visual effect.
  3. The towering limestone cliffs surrounding the lagoons, forming a dramatic and secluded backdrop that makes visitors feel like they’ve discovered a hidden paradise.

For those who want to explore this gem further, you can easily rent a kayak before your tour starts. The cost is typically around 400 Philippine pesos (~ £6), making it a budget-friendly option for all adventure seekers.

  3. Bring a dry bag to protect your valuables like phones and cameras when swimming between the lagoons. Here is our top recommendation: Dry Bag On Amazon.
  4. Pack reef shoes or aqua shoes to make it easier to get in and out of the boat and climb over the limestone wall separating the lagoons. If you don’t own a pair, these are the ones we have: Reef Shoes On Amazon.
  5. Consider booking a private boat tour for a more exclusive experience without the crowds.

Taking A Drone To The Twin Lagoon

If you love capturing your adventures from a birds eye perspective then the Twin Lagoon offers stunning scenery from above! We highly recommend taking your drone if you love to capture this unique perspective.

Here are some top tips for taking a drone to the Twin Lagoons:

  • Always check up to date drone regulations for the country you are visiting, these can change regularly so its best to check frequently and multiple sources to be well informed. At the time of writing you did not need a permit to fly a drone under 250g in the Philippines. However, there are some guidelines that need to be followed:
  • Maintain a Safe Distance: Ensure that your drone remains at least 30 meters (approximately 100 feet) away from individuals not involved in its operation.
  • Altitude Restriction: You must always keep your drone’s altitude below 400 feet (122 meters).
  • Favourable Conditions: Operate your drone only during daylight hours and when weather conditions are favourable.
  • Proximity to Airports: Respect the airspace around airports. Maintain a distance of at least 10 kilometres (approximately 6 miles) from airports and other designated aviation zones.
  • Populated Areas: Refrain from flying your drone over densely populated areas, such as cities, towns, or crowded public spaces.
  • Privacy Considerations: Be mindful of others’ privacy when operating your drone.
  • Take off point: You can choose to fly your drone from the boat if you feel confident to do so. But be mindful however that if the boat moves your home point setting will change and this can be risky business for your drone landing in the drink.
  • Alternatively, you can take a dry bag and carry/swim your drone over to land to launch. However, there are very few flat surfaces to land so we would advise being confident hand launching and catching to do this option.

When To Visit The Twin Lagoon

Choosing the perfect time to visit the Twin Lagoon can make all the difference to your experience!

Time of Year: The optimal period to visit the Twin Lagoons is within the dry season, typically extending from November to April. During this period, you can expect clearer skies, calmer waters, and minimal rainfall, creating ideal conditions for outdoor exploration. However, bear in mind that this period also sees a surge in tourist activity, resulting in larger crowds and increased accommodation prices.

Shoulder Seasons: If you prefer a quieter experience, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons of May or October when the weather is still pleasant and the crowds are fewer. Avoid planning your trip during the rainy season, from June to September, as heavy downpours and choppy waters can hinder your plans.
