Avoid Those Pesky Mosquitos

Nothing ruins a Philippines sunset like being on the menu for mosquitoes, and Filipino mosquitos are no joke! Fortunately, there are several ways to keep the pesky bloodsuckers at bay. Here are our top recommendations for your Philippines packing list to keep you off the mosquito menu:

The Best Mosquito Repellent

Finding a mosquito repellant that actually works is no easy task! Trek is fantastic for us, and we highly recommend it! However, it’s worth noting that Trek does contain Deet. So, if you are sensitive to Deet, this might not be the one for you, but it’s one of the only things that works for us! Regardless of brand, mosquito repellant is at the top of the packing list for any tropical trip to allow you to roam freely without those pesky bloodsuckers crashing the party!

Mosquito Repellent Wall Plug

Another recommendation for your Philippines packing list is a mosquito-repellent wall plug-in. These devices emit a steady flow of insect repellent, typically containing ingredients like citronella or eucalyptus, which can effectively deter mosquitoes from entering your living space. Unlike topical repellents, wall plug-ins provide continuous protection without the need for reapplication. You simply plug them into an electrical outlet and let them work their magic. They are affordable and super small, so they definitely make it onto our packing list. Here is our recommendation:

Mosquito Net

A mosquito net is a great companion for travellers exploring the Philippines, especially if camping is on the agenda. These lightweight and portable nets provide a protective barrier against mosquitoes and other insects. Whether you’re camping under the stars in the lush rainforests of Palawan or cosying up in a rustic beachside bungalow, a mosquito net offers reliable defence against pesky bugs. Plus, setting up a mosquito net is quick and easy, and they pack down super small for your travel days!

Mosquito Anti-Itch Plasters

We have yet to try these, but we have heard really good things, and they have great reviews, so they have made it onto the Philippines packing list. Mosquito anti-itch plasters reportedly offer quick and effective relief from the itch, swelling and redness caused by mosquito bites. By applying a plaster directly to the affected area, you can provide targeted relief and minimise the urge to scratch. Additionally, mosquito anti-itch plasters are compact and easy to carry, making them ideal for travel. If you do try them, we would love to know what you think in the comments!

Disclaimer: Please note that these plasters state they do not contain any medicines. We are not medically trained and do not offer medical advice; use these at your own risk. Likewise, always check the ingredients and materials to ensure you do not have any allergies before use.

Top Tips To Avoid Being Stuck On The Loo

One of the common concerns for travellers is the risk of encountering a “bad belly” due to consuming contaminated water or food. While we have yet to personally experience this in the Philippines, preparing is essential!

To avoid the toilet rush, here are some top tips:

  1. Avoid Tap Water: Stick to bottled water or water that has been adequately purified to prevent consuming harmful bacteria. In some parts of the Philippines, particularly in rural areas or areas with inadequate sanitation infrastructure, the water may contain contaminants such as bacteria, parasites, and viruses, which can pose a risk of gastrointestinal illnesses for travellers. You may see locals drinking tap water, but this is because their bodies have adjusted! It is still advisable for all travellers to avoid tap water.
  2.  Don’t Brush Your Teeth With Tap Water: Although we both do not typically follow this tip and have always been fine, if you want to be extra safe, brush your teeth with bottled water as well! And avoid ingesting any water in the shower.
  3.  Wash Your Hands Frequently: This one goes without saying, but be sure to wash your hands with soap and water before handling food or eating.
  4.  Be Cautious with Ice: This one can catch people out! Be aware that ice could be made from tap water. Always ask when you buy drinks and purchase from reputable establishments.
  5.  Watch What You Eat: Be cautious of foods that may have been prepared in tap water, such as salads and raw seafood.
  6.  Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids, preferably bottled water, to stay hydrated!
  7.  Use Precautions with Alcohol: This one might be tough to hear for some Brits 😉, but as we know, too much alcohol can exacerbate digestive issues. Drink sensibly, and don’t be afraid to have a few glasses of water between the beers. Also, be mindful that liquor can be very, very strong abroad, especially if made locally. If in doubt, ask for branded spirits rather than house spirits.
  8.  Pack Medications: Consider bringing over-the-counter medications like pain relief, diarrhoea medication and rehydration salts to manage symptoms if they occur. We will not recommend specific medicines in this article as we are not medical professionals. Still, these are points worth considering before your trip! Always consult a healthcare professional before taking any medication.

Here are some essential items for your Philippines packing list to help you avoid and/or manage Travelers bad belly:

Travel Water Bottle With Filter

This bottle automatically filters your water and adds an additional layer of protection and some peace of mind! However, you should still always fill this with bottled water to be extra safe!

Pocket Tissues

This one may seem silly, but we promise you will Thank us later! Many, many toilets in the Philippines do not have a Loo roll! Pocket tissues are the essential item you did not know you needed 😉

Pocket Size Hand Sanitiser

For the same reason above, hand sanitiser can be helpful! Toilets in Asia are not always the same as back home… you may encounter a hole in the ground without a sink or soap. A solid squat and some hand sanitiser goes a long way 😉

Travel Sickness Glasses

These bad boys are an absolute game changer if you get travel sick!! We’ll be honest, initially, we did not think they would work, but… for Beth (who really feels the sea and the road), they genuinely work! These work a bit like a spirit level to even out your horizon! Admittedly… they are not the most fashionable haha! However, for how well they work, that is a small price to pay, in our opinion, and they always make for a good conversation starter with fellow travellers!

These also make it into our collection of ways to help manage a lousy belly because, honestly, if you already feel sick and need to keep travelling (which happens), then every little helps!

Essential Health & Safety Items For Your Philippines Packing List

The Philippines is absolutely breathtaking and promises unforgettable experiences, however, like any tropical country it comes with certain considerations for your health and safety along the way. Here are some essential items for your Philippines packing list to keep you patched up and ready for adventure.

A First Aid Kit

A first aid kit is a packing essential and can help you patch up lots of minor cuts/ grazes, amongst other things! This example is quite a large kit but there are plenty of different size options for you to choose from.

Reef Safe Sun Screen

The sun in the Philippines is no joke! Protecting your skin is essential, especially in the water, where you may not feel the heat as intensely! Using reef-safe sunscreen offers numerous benefits for both the user and for Marine life. Traditional sunscreens often contain chemicals such as octinoxate and oxybenzone, which could potentially cause coral bleaching and harm marine life.

Reef-safe sunscreens, on the other hand, are formulated with ingredients that are less harmful to coral reefs and aquatic ecosystems. Additionally, reef-safe sunscreens are often gentler on the skin, especially for those with sensitive skin or allergies. Here is our top pick.

Essential Items For A Good Nights Sleep

If you are anything like us you love the social aspect of staying in hostels and the Philippines has some of the best! However, you may also love a good nights sleep! We get it! Here are some perfect items to ensure you get the best of both worlds:

Loop Ear Plugs

Loop earplugs are your ultimate travel companion for catching Z’s on buses, planes, and bustling hostel dorms! Say goodbye to noisy neighbors and that pesky engine hum. With Loop, you can enjoy the blissful benefits of uninterrupted sleep, ensuring you are refreshed and ready to conquer the day. We swear by them!

Blackout Eye Mask

A blackout sleep mask is another top recommendation for your Philippines packing list. This is a game-changer for travelers bunking in hostel dorms and for long plane/ bus journeys. With its ability to block out light completely, it creates a dark and conducive environment for a restful sleep, regardless of the time of day. In a shared dormitory where lights may be on at odd hours, a sleep mask ensures you can catch those much-needed Z’s without disturbances. Its compact size also makes it a convenient addition to any travel kit, offering portability without compromising comfort. Say hello to a rejuvenating night’s sleep, no matter where your adventures take you!

Travel Pillow

There are so many amazing islands to see in the Philippines, therefore, getting a good kip on travel days between islands is important. The Trtl travel pillow takes sleep on the go to another level… especially if you are not near a window where you can rest your head on a more typical travel pillow. This pillow works by supporting your neck and head in a more upright position, allowing for better sleep and reducing neck stiffness. However, it is on the pricier side, so remember to always purchase within your budget.

Carrying All Your Belongings

Backpack

With plenty of compartments and pockets to store essentials, a travel backpack keeps everything organised and accessible. Whether you’re trekking through bustling cities or hiking remote trails, a good all-purpose travel backpack allows for streamlined, hands-free travel and enables you to explore with ease! We have linked our favourite, which we think is excellent value, but there are many options to choose from!

Bumbag

Next on The Philippines packing list is a bumbag! This is the ultimate hands-free solution for keeping your belongings secure and safe while you explore The Philippines! With easy access to your valuables right at your fingertips, a bumbag keeps your phone, wallet, camera and other essentials close and secure. We have attached our favourite value options with lots of colours and styles to choose from 😊

Packing Cubes

Packing cubes are a game-changer when it comes to keeping your luggage organized and a great item for your Philippines packing list! These nifty compartments allow you to separate and categorize your clothes, toiletries, and other essentials, making it easier to find what you need without rummaging through a messy suitcase or backpack. Packing cubes also compress your items, allowing you to fit more into your bag. Plus, they keep your clothes neatly folded and wrinkle-free during transit, so you can spend less time unpacking and more time exploring the beautiful destinations of the Philippines.

Staying Connected

Staying connected while travelling in the Philippines can be a bit challenging, but with the right gear, you can breeze through it. Below, we recommend our favorite travel adapter for your Philippines packing list and a trusty power bank for those long days of exploration.

Our Recommended Data SIM

Top Travel Tip: While Wi-Fi is available in many places, it’s notoriously unreliable in the Philippines, especially in remote areas. For a more consistent internet connection, we highly recommend getting a data SIM card. You can easily pick one up from the airport upon arrival, and we recommend going with Globe for their widespread coverage and reliable service.

Worldwide Travel Adaptor

Another must for your Philippines packing list is a worldwide travel adapter. This adaptor saves so much space as it has multiple outlets in one device and allows seamless charging wherever your adventures lead. MOMAX is our personal favorite as it has a 30W outlet, which allows for fast charging of bigger devices, including laptops and our DJI drone (Aka Bumble Bee 😉). When you are constantly on the go and have lots of devices to charge quickly, this is the ultimate travel sidekick.

Portable Charger

Staying on remote islands and spending full days island hopping is up there with the best things to do in The Philippines. With a power bank in your backpack, you can stay connected, capture every moment, and navigate unfamiliar terrain without worrying about running out of juice.

Top Travel Tip: Remember that power banks contain lithium batteries, so it’s crucial to check your airline’s regulations on lithium battery allowances to avoid any potential confiscation or travel headaches. We have attached the power bank we use which is 10,000mAh and is generally accepted on most airlines. However, please do check with your specific airline to be sure!

Philippines Packing List For The Ocean

In the Philippines, turquoise waters teem with vibrant marine life. You’ll undoubtedly find yourself drawn to the ocean’s allure. From snorkelling among colourful coral reefs to diving alongside majestic whale sharks, aquatic adventures are everywhere! To make the most of your time exploring these underwater wonders, it’s essential to come prepared with the right gear. Here are some of our top recommendations for the Philippines packing list to make your aquatic adventures seamless and unforgettable:

A Dry Bag

At the end of the day, dry gear is happy gear! A dry bag is a must for The Philippines packing list to keep all of your belongings dry and ready for action no matter what Mother Nature throws your way! A dry bag is also fantastic for island hopping, boat trips and kayaking adventures. We can’t tell you how many times our bag has saved us, and allowed us to swim with our drone to remote spots! There are lots of different sizes and colors to choose from so you can choose the perfect fit for your style and needs!

Water Shoes

Water shoes also need to be on The Philippines packing list! These are essential for island hopping tours where you have to wade over sharp rocks or slippery surfaces to get on and off the boat! Step confidently into any aquatic adventure: Whether you’re hopping between islands, exploring hidden waterfalls, or navigating rocky shores, water shoes provide the perfect blend of protection and comfort. We have linked the ones we bought, which are great for us! There are lots of sizes and snazzy colours available!

Mask and Snorkel

Owning your own mask and snorkel offers numerous benefits for underwater exploration in the Philippines. Firstly, owning your own mask ensures a comfortable and snug fit. This reduces the likelihood of leaks, allowing for clearer visibility underwater and can significantly reduce anxiety for those who are newer to snorkelling or nervous underwater. You’ll be able to focus on the breathtaking marine life around you without worrying about water seeping in.

Additionally, using your own equipment eliminates the need to rely on rental gear, which may not always be adequately maintained or sanitized. Here is our top recommendation, which we personally own and believe is very affordable! There are lots of colours to choose from!

Snorkeling Fins

It’s worth noting that snorkeling fins are not an essential item for your Philippines packing list. However, somewhat surprisingly, we have found that most tours do not provide fins in the Philippines! While this is not an issue for some, it could be frustrating for others who love to free dive! Therefore, we have included our top recommendation for affordable fins that are also lightweight and easy to pack in your case! This is the same pair Beth owns 😊

Avoiding Sea Lice!!

Sea lice are tiny marine parasites found in ocean waters, often near reefs or coastal areas. They are barely visible to the human eye and can easily mistaken for grains of sand. While sea lice don’t pose significant health risks, they can cause irritation and discomfort to swimmers and snorkelers. When sea lice come into contact with human skin, they can cause itching, redness, and even a rash known as sea lice dermatitis. Trust us; we have learned this the hard way… See below!

Sea Lice Sting

To avoid sea lice, wear protective clothing such as rash guards and avoid swimming in areas where sea lice are prevalent. Ask the locals if you are unsure!

Rash Guard

Unfortunately, sea lice are often found in areas with abundant marine life, including near turtles. They are attracted to the warmth and movement of aquatic animals, which can serve as hosts for their larvae. Therefore, if you want to spot those awesome turtles and marine life, a rash guard must be on your Philippines packing list! Below are options for men and women as well as full length rash leggings for those who want to be extra safe!

Other Items For Your Philippines Packing List

A Rain Coat

While the Philippines often boasts glorious sunshine, like any tropical country, weather can be unpredictable. A lightweight raincoat is a must for the Philippines packing list to offer protection against sudden downpours without adding bulk to your luggage.

Top Tip: The best time to visit the Philippines is during the dry season, which runs from December to May. These months offer more predictable weather, calmer seas, and generally sunny days. The wet season typically spans from June to November and brings some rain. It’s essential to note that the Philippines’ weather can be a bit unpredictable. Rain showers might decide to join the party even during the dry season, but they’re usually short-lived and followed by lots of sunshine.

Reef Safe Leave In Conditioner

A good leave-in conditioner is a lifesaver when you have longer hair and are in and out of the ocean a lot, especially when snorkelling and diving as the mask can become a tangled mess! I am sure some of you can relate! Reef-safe leave-in conditioner offers a convenient and eco-friendly way to nourish hair and avoid tangled nightmares while also protecting marine ecosystems. Here is one of our recommendations.

Quick-Dry Travel Towel

A quick-dry microfiber towel is an essential companion for travellers exploring the Philippines. Unlike traditional cotton towels, microfiber towels are lightweight, compact, and quick-drying, making them ideal for on-the-go adventurers. With their absorbent and fast-drying properties, these towels are perfect for drying off after a dip at the Philippines’ stunning beaches or waterfalls. Additionally, they roll up small to save space in your luggage.

Camera Equipment For The Philippines

An Important Note

A high-quality camera can be incredible…
However, we advise only purchasing if you feel you can afford to!
These days you can get a lot out of a phone when starting out, but if you are in the market to purchase cameras & equipment for your Philippines trip, below are our top recommendations.

GoPro HD Hero 12

The GoPro HERO 12 is designed for those who love adventure and makes it on to our Philippines packing list as it really can capture the magic! With its advanced features and robust build, the HERO 12 is the ultimate tool for recording your most epic moments. Equipped with a powerful 12K sensor, the HERO 12 delivers breathtaking image quality, allowing you to relive every adventure with lifelike clarity. Its HyperSmooth 4.0 stabilization technology ensures silky-smooth footage, even in the most challenging conditions, while the TimeWarp 4.0 feature lets you create mesmerizing time-lapse videos.

We use the GoPro 12 for the majority of our vlogging and underwater adventures! However, if you are on a tighter budget you could also consider going for an older model of GoPro as lots of them still offer great features!

Barracuda Lake, Underwater

Selfie Stick

A GoPro selfie stick is the ultimate companion for capturing unforgettable moments and makes it onto the Philippines packing list if you are taking a GoPro. This selfie stick is our favourite as its buoyant design ensures it stays afloat in water. With its extendable reach and secure mount, you can effortlessly capture stunning shots on land and underwater. Whether snorkelling in crystal-clear waters, exploring hidden caves, or hiking through lush forests, this lightweight and portable accessory allows you to easily capture every adventure.

GoPro Dome Housing

If you are taking a GoPro, another item for the Philippines packing list is dome housing! This housings unique design allows you to capture underwater and above-water scenes simultaneously, creating stunning split-level images. Whether exploring vibrant coral reefs, pristine beaches, or majestic waterfalls, the dome housing enhances your photography and videography skills, bringing your underwater adventures to life.

Waterproof Phone Case

If you are not in the market for a GoPro but would still love to capture some underwater shots on your phone, then a more affordable underwater housing may be the way to go!

Top Tip: Although many phones these days are advertised as waterproof, we strongly advise against using them underwater without any protection, especially in salt water! An underwater phone housing provides good all-around protection, allowing you to capture epic underwater moments with less risk of breaking your phone!

We own this brand, and it has always worked very well for us before we got our GoPro! However, always use at your own risk and never exceed recommended depth limits!

Budget Water Resistant Phone Case

A waterproof phone pouch can be a budget-friendly solution for keeping your phone safe from water damage while enjoying water activities in the Philippines. These pouches typically provide a basic level of protection against splashes and light submersion, making them suitable for surface-level use such as swimming or snorkelling. However, use them at your own risk, as they may not offer the same level of reliability as more expensive waterproof cases. Avoid using them at deeper depths or in rough water conditions to minimize the risk of water seeping in and damaging your phone.

DJI Mini 4 Pro

It’s important to note that a drone is not necessary when travelling to the Philippines! You can have an incredible time and capture unforgettable memories with much cheaper handheld cameras or simply your phone! However, The Philippines is one of the most stunning places we have ever flone our drone, so if you are in the market, here is our recommendation for the Philippines packing list.

Our personal favourite drone is the DJI Mini 4 Pro! This compact, powerful drone is perfect for travellers looking to capture stunning aerial footage on their adventures. With its lightweight design and advanced features, this drone is easy to pack and take with you wherever you go. It’s also very intuitive for newer drone pilots!
Additionally, as this drone is sub-250 grams, it falls into the micro-drone category, which means it is exempt from certain regulations in many countries. This makes it easier to fly in various locations without navigating complex legal restrictions, allowing you to focus on capturing stunning aerial footage hassle-free.

Barracuda Lake is the barracuda lake dangerous

Drone Battery Lipo-Safe Bags

If you do add a drone to your Philippines packing list, Lipo (Lithium Polymer) cases also need to be packed! These compact and durable cases are specifically designed to protect against the risk of fire or explosion that can occur if lithium batteries are damaged or mishandled. With their fire-resistant materials and secure closures, Lipo cases provide an extra layer of safety and peace of mind for drone enthusiasts on the go.
Moreover, many airlines, including some in the Philippines, require them to comply with regulations for travelling with lithium drone batteries, making them a must-have for air travel with your drone gear.
