However, because Ditaytayan Island is relatively remote, it tends to be much less crowded. This makes it one of our recommendations for the best things to do in the Philippines.

11. Lusong Coral Garden Reef

The two tours mentioned above also include a visit to the Lusong Coral Garden Reef, as they are located nearby. Both sites are featured on our list of the best things to do in the Philippines, each showcasing its own unique beauty.

Lusong Coral Garden Reef

Lusong Coral Garden Reef is a vibrant underwater ecosystem filled with colorful marine life and stunning coral formations. Characterized by crystal-clear waters and excellent visibility, the reef features corals in shades of pink, blue, yellow, and green. Its dense coral structures provide a habitat for a variety of tropical fish, including clownfish, butterflyfish, parrotfish, and snappers. With ongoing conservation efforts and its remote location limiting human impact, Lusong Coral Garden thrives as a healthy ecosystem, where you might even spot a turtle.

12. Maquinit Hot Springs

Maquinit Hot Springs are among a few of its kind in the world. Nestled amidst limestone rocks, mangrove trees, and a nearby beach, the serene setting is perfect for unwinding after a day of adventure. Visitors can enjoy a soothing soak while watching the sunset or stargazing at night.

You can reach the hot springs from Coron town by taking a 20 to 25-minute tricycle ride along the southern coast of Busuanga Island. Alternatively, you can include a visit to Maquinit Hot Springs along with other top attractions like Mt. Tapyas in an affordable Coron Town tour. Here are our top recommendations.

13. CoCo Beach

Coco Beach makes it onto our list of best things to do in The Philippines as it is a tropical haven known for its pristine white sandy beaches and crystal-clear blue waters.

14. Kayangan Lake

Unfortunately, we couldn’t visit Kayangan Lake during our trip to Coron, but it’s one of the area’s most popular attractions, so we wanted to highlight it to ensure you don’t miss out! Similar to Barracuda Lake, this brackish lake is regarded as one of the cleanest in Asia. Visitors rave about its stunning underwater rock formations and crystal-clear visibility!

You can access this iconic spot as part of Island-Hopping Tour A and several other tours. Here are some top recommendations:

15. Explore Coron Town

Exploring Coron Town provides a charming mix of local culture and lively activity. The streets are filled with colorful shops and markets offering everything from souvenirs to adventure essentials. A street market features a variety of local goods, handicrafts, and tasty street food, showcasing the vibrant culture of Coron.

Coron Town Basketball Court

A personal highlight for us was the town square, where we stopped to watch the locals play basketball, the national sport in the Philippines. 17. Island Hopping Tour

You simply cannot visit El Nido without embarking on an island-hopping adventure. After all, this is what El Nido is famous for, and trust us, it lives up to the hype!

There are four distinct tours to choose from: Tour A, Tour B, Tour C, and Tour D. Every tour highlights a different aspect of this tropical paradise, from secluded beaches and limestone cliffs to coral reefs and enchanting lagoons.

Island Hopping El Nido, Philippines

We have personally done Tours A and B, and both were incredible. If you are looking for a quieter experience with fewer crowds, then go for tour B or tour D. These are typically less popular; therefore, the locations you visit will likely be less crowded. However, Tour A and C offer some of the more famous sights and scenes. Honestly, all 4 tours are some of the best things to do in The Philippines! However, we have included a list of the locations you will visit in each tour to help you make your decision:

Tour A: Highlights include the Big Lagoon, Small Lagoon, Secret Lagoon, Shimizu Island, and Seven Commandos Beach.

Tour B: This tour features Snake Island, Pinagbuyutan Island, Cudugnon Cave, Cathedral Cave, and Entalula Beach.

Tour C: Explore Matinloc Shrine, Secret Beach, Hidden Beach, Star Beach, and Helicopter Island.

Tour D: Discover Cadlao Island, Pasandigan Beach, Natnat Beach, Bukal Island, and Paradise Beach.

If You Would Like To Book Your Tour In Advance, Check Out These Options Below:

We went for the best of both worlds with tours A and B and loved every minute! Whichever you choose, there is no doubt island-hopping here is a quintessential experience that showcases the region’s unparalleled beauty and is one not to miss!

Be Aware!

While the above are the typical itineraries for each tour, these can vary and sometimes tour itineraries have to change last minute due to weather! To reduce the chances of this happening, the best time to visit El Nido is during the dry season from November to May.

18. The Big Lagoon

Of all the places in the island-hopping itineraries, the Big Lagoon deserves an honourable mention! This was one of our favorite places in El Nido, and is absolutely one of the best things to do in The Philippines!

We highly recommend renting a kayak and making your way into the Lagoon to explore its dramatic scenes close-up! This iconic attraction beckons many adventure seekers with its serene turquoise waters, encircled by El Nido’s famous limestone cliffs and lush greenery.

If you need any further convincing see for yourself:

One of the most enchanting features of the Big Lagoon is its hidden corners and secluded alcoves, accessible only by navigating through narrow passageways with a kayak! Usually you can rent a kayak from your tour provider on the day for a small fee, and its 100% worth it! Just make sure you pick a tour that gives you enough time to explore this epic location!

If you would like to book your tour to the Big Lagoon in advance, here are our top recommendations:

19. Canopy Walk

Are you the daring type? This canopy walk makes it onto the list of the best things to do in The Philippines due to the panoramic views of the surrounding landscape when you reach the top! It’s also a really affordable activity for those on a budget, costing roughly 400 PHP, which is about £5.50.

Canopy Walk El Nido View Point

However, if you are scared of heights, you may want to sit this one out 😅

The walk takes roughly an hour, depending on how long you want to stay at the top and involves walking over swinging bridges that are very high! On the contrary, if you love an adventure, you will LOVE this canopy walk amongst the trees🌴

You can simply turn up on the day. This is what we did and there was minimal waiting time! However, if you would like to book in advance, here is an option from Klook.

Top Travel Tips:

  1. Wear trainers!!! It is quite a rough terrain, almost mini rock climbing at times, so flip-flops likely won’t be the best
  2. Bring water: it can be a pretty sweaty climb up, so stay hydrated!
  3. Look it up before you go: once you start, it’s quite hard to change your mind and go back 😂

Here are some shots to help you make your decision:

20. Snake Island

Snake Island is next on the list of best things to do in The Philippines. Contrary to its name, this idyllic spot is not inhabited by reptiles but derives its title from its stunning ‘S’ shaped sandbar that emerges during low tide!

Drone Picture of Snake Island In the Philippines. Part of a travel blog which has Travel guides and shows all the best things to do in the Philippines

This stunning island is accessible via boat from El Nido and boasts crystal-clear waters ideal for snorkelling and swimming. There is also an awesome viewpoint on the island, which takes just a short 10-minute hike!

Snake Island El Nido

If you are lucky enough to visit at low tide, we would highly recommend walking out along the beautiful sandbar! It’s an unreal feeling!

Here are some top picks to book your trip to Snake Island:

21. Cudugnon Cave

Cudugnon Cave is often part of the same tour as Snake Island, so you can tick off these two best things to do in The Philippines in one go!

Cudugnon Cave El Nido The Philippines

When we first walked along the shore to this cave, it was very hard to spot the entrance. In fact, the entrance is a tiny opening that you almost have to army roll through or slide in on your back! Pictured above, we have pointed to where the cave opening is and as you can see it’s hardly visible! Don’t worry, though. It’s easy enough to climb in, and there are guides helping at times who put down life jackets to protect you from the rocks as you slide!

Cudugnon Cave Entrance El Nido

Getting into the cave added to the adventure, as once you are inside, it expands into a dramatic open space with sunbeams shining through! Truly, it is a picturesque experience and one not to miss!

Cudugnon Cave Entrance

Not only is Cudugnon Cave an epic location to visit, it also holds a fascinating history. This cave actually served as a final resting place for ancient immigrants from Borneo, whose remains, along with various other artefacts, offer valuable insights into the region’s early civilizations. Among the discoveries are pieces of jewellery and pottery, alongside human remains dating back to the Neolithic era.

Inside Cudugnon Cave

These findings provide a glimpse into the cultural practices and lifestyles of the early inhabitants of Palawan. To preserve this heritage, the artefacts and remains found in Cudugnon Cave have been transferred to the National Museum of the Philippines, where they continue to contribute to our understanding of the region’s past.

22. Seven Commandos Beach

Seven Commandos Beach is amongst the best things to do in The Philippines due to its stunning white sands and Turquoise waters! See for yourself:

Seven Commandos Beach Rock Formation

This beach offers a postcard-perfect setting for relaxation and is also a great spot to play some beach volleyball!

Seven Commandos Beach

Legend has it that the beach is named after seven Japanese commandos who found solace here after World War II. Today, it’s a popular stop on El Nido’s famous island-hopping tours. All of the guides and boat captains love playing some volleyball here at the end of their working day, and it was great fun to join in!

This is also an excellent spot for some drone flying if you have one with you!

25. Taraw Peak Hike

Unfortunately, we did not have time to do this hike during our last trip to El Nido, but it has been highly recommended to us, so has made it onto the list of the best things to do in The Philippines!

Taraw Peak Hike offers an exhilarating adventure for those seeking breathtaking views and an epic trekking experience. Known as the highest point in El Nido, Taraw Cliff, also called Mt. Taraw, is a monolith made of limestone with sharp, jagged rocks that provide a challenging yet rewarding climb. The hike typically takes an hour or so, and it is recommended that you hire a guide to navigate the rough terrain.

Despite the challenging terrain, the journey to the summit is described as surreal and picturesque, offering panoramic views of Bacuit Bay and the surrounding islands. Visitors are advised to wear appropriate footwear, bring gloves, pack light, and stay hydrated during this trek.

26. Las Cabanas Beach

Las Cabanas beach. El Nido Zip Line

Las Cabanas Beach is next on the list of best things to do in The Philippines due to its unique blend of stunning natural beauty, exciting activities, and a relaxing atmosphere. This beach offers visitors the opportunity to relax, sunbathe, and swim in turquoise waters. It is also an ideal spot for catching an iconic sunset.

Las Cabanas Beach El Nido Birds Eye View

For adventure seekers, Las Cabanas Beach is renowned for its thrilling ziplining experience mentioned earlier, which allows visitors to fly over the beach, to a nearby island! With several beach bars and restaurants along the shore, this beach has something for everyone!

Las Cabanas Beach El Nido

27. The Philippine Experience

The Philippine Experience is an epic cultural day where you can delve into the vibrant Filipino way of life and culture. It is just a short walk from Las Cabanas Beach and The El Nido Zip Line, so you could tick off a few of the best things to do in The Philippines in a day!

Climbing A Coconut Tree

The Philippine experience starts around 9 am until roughly 14:30/15:00, and highlights include:

  • A flora & fauna trek.
  • Traditional Filipino stick fighting.
  • A cooking class.
  • A lesson in coconut milk/oil making.
  • The awesome opportunity to climb a coconut tree.
  • Local Crafts
  • Traditional dance
  • Filipino games
Traditional Filipino Stick Fighting

One of our favourite moments from this day was hearing the guides’ personal family stories. These stories included tales of survival through the Japanese invasion and how this influenced many aspects of Filipino culture today! Overall, this was a fantastic day, and we highly recommend you check it out when you are in El Nido!

28. Explore El Nido Town

When visiting El Nido, you cannot miss the opportunity to explore the vibrant streets of El Nido town. This is where the hustle and bustle of daily activities, and island-hopping tours meets the charm of a seaside village. You can expect colorful alleyways lined with quaint shops and lively cafes.

El Nido Town

In the evening, some of the streets close for an awesome night market! Here, you can sample delicious street food delicacies, browse stalls selling handmade crafts and souvenirs, and soak up the lively atmosphere as musicians and performers entertain the crowds. There is something for everyone, which is why El Nido Town has made it onto our list of best things to do in The Philippines. In fact, Beth was able to purchase Denz a basketball jersey at this market, which is a tradition of ours wherever we visit.

El Nido Town With Limestone Cliffs

Port Barton

In our opinion, Port Barton is the most underrated place in The Philippines! This stunning fishing village is often overlooked amidst more popular destinations in Palawan, but in our opinion Port Barton is one of the best things to do in the Philippines! This off-the-beaten-path destination offers idyllic beaches, vibrant marine life, lush jungles and secret waterfalls! Furthermore, Port Barton offers the perfect stop off when making your way up to El Nido! This stunning coastal village truly encapsulates the laid-back charm that draws travellers to the Philippines.

If you’re wondering whether this village is worth adding to your itinerary or questioning what activities are on offer, then look no further!

Top Tip

Use Port Barton as a stop off on the way to El Nido:

A common way to get to El Nido is to fly into Puerto Princesa Airport (PPS) which is the main airport in Palawan. These flights are much more regular and affordable than flying straight into El Nido. However, once you arrive in Puerto Princesa, is it a 5 hour van journey up to El Nido. Port Barton offers the perfect stop off on the way up to El Nido, breaking the long journey in half!

29. Island Hopping

Island hopping is perhaps the most renowned thing to do in Port Barton!

Shared and private boat options can whisk visitors away to explore the region’s stunning islands, coves, and sandbars, each just as stunning as the last. Sail across turquoise waters to secluded beaches fringed by swaying palms, where you can bask in the sun or snorkel amid vibrant coral gardens teeming with marine life! Venture to hidden lagoons, cascading waterfalls, and sea caves carved into limestone cliffs, all of which will leave you awestruck by their natural beauty.

Boat-In-The-Philippines

Many tours include a delicious buffet lunch on a remote island, allowing you to savour local flavours while surrounded by Port Bartons beauty. What is particularly special about island hopping in Port Barton is that the tours are far less busy than in other regions in Palawan, such as El Nido and Coron, meaning you can often have whole beaches to yourself! For this reason, island hopping in Port Barton is one of the best things to do in The Philippines, especially for those looking to escape the crowds!

Beach In Port Barton
Beach Near Port Barton

Here are our top suggestions for Port Barton island hopping tours. We have included shared and private options, depending on your budget and preference:

30. Itaytay Beach

Next on the list of best things to do in The Philippines is Itaytay Beach. Also known as Port Barton Beach, Itaytay is the main beach and central hub of activity in this laid-back fishing village. This long stretch of golden sand fringed by swaying palm trees serves as the gateway to the region’s island-hopping adventures. While less pristine than some of the more secluded island beaches, Itaytay Beach has its own rustic charm. It is conveniently located just a stone’s throw from the village’s accommodations, restaurants, and tour operators.

Itaytay Beach
Itaytay Beach Port Barton

You can stroll along the beach, soak up the sun, or grab a refreshing drink at one of the casual beachfront bars while watching the colourful outrigger boats come and go. You could also choose to rent a kayak and explore this beautiful bay or enjoy a swing on one of the beach’s many rope swings. You can visit this iconic beach for free and its highly likely your chosen accommodation will be very close by! We have highlighted Itaytay Beach’s location on the map below to help you plan!

31. Starfish Island

Starfish-Islnad-Coron-The-Philippines

Starfish Island was one of Beth’s favourite places in Palawan and is definitely one of the best things to do in The Philippines. Located just off the coast of Port Barton, Starfish Island is a unique sandbar that emerges from the turquoise waters during low tide. As its name suggests, this tiny islet is renowned for an abundance of starfish that can be found nestled in the shallow waters and sandy flats.

You can easily wade out to explore the sandbar, marvelling at the vibrant marine life that calls this area home. Starfish of various colours and sizes can be spotted clinging to the sea floor; just be careful where you tread, haha! While not technically an island, the unique location offers a serene escape with its white sands and crystal-clear waters that are perfect for swimming and relaxing. It’s a must-visit destination, providing a unique opportunity to witness and appreciate the beauty of these remarkable marine creatures in their natural habitat.

This private island hopping tour includes a stop at Starfish Island as well as many other awesome places off the coast of Port Barton:

32. Bigaho Waterfalls

Walk to Bigaho Falls
Biggaho Waterfall

Bigaho is a picturesque and relatively hidden waterfall nestled in lush jungle next to the tiny village of Bigaho, 13km north of Port Barton. You can embark on a moderate 2-hour scooter ride from Port Barton to reach this hidden gem. We have highlighted the Google Maps location below so you can pin it for your trip.

Alternatively, many island-hopping tours from Port Barton include a stop at Bigaho Falls, allowing you to arrive by boat. This tour below offers a visit to Bigaho Falls:

We visited this waterfall as part of an island hopping tour and walked there straight off the beach. The walk to the falls takes you through stunning scenery and the lovely village of Bigaho. This was a fantastic experience and definitely one of the best things to do in The Philippines. As with many areas near Port Barton, these falls are less well-known, so it is highly possible you could have them to yourself!

Top Tips:

If you want to visit this hidden gem, we have some top tips:

  1. Take water shoes: Rocks can be pretty sharp on the feet getting in and out of the waterfall. Water shoes help to protect your feet.
  2. The Hike: This hike is only about 20 mins from the beachfront where the boats can dock. It’s not too physically exerting, but take plenty of water to stay hydrated.

33. Overnight Camping On Calipayan Island

Calipayan Island holds a special place in our hearts, and if we recommend picking one thing to do in Port Barton… Camping at Calipayan Island would be it! Staying overnight on this remote island was one of the most incredible experiences, offering the opportunity to immerse in the natural beauty of Port Barton.

Calipayan Beach
Calipayan Beach

Calipayan Island is a tranquil escape, with pristine white sand beaches fringed by swaying palm trees and crystal-clear waters ideal for swimming and snorkelling. There is also a net for beach volleyball and some beautiful beach swings. As night falls, the stars are the most incredible part of this whole experience. With little to no light pollution, these were some of the best stars we have ever seen. Furthermore, if you are lucky, you might see bioluminescent plankton in the water’s edge!!

In the morning, you wake up on the beach to the sound of the waves and the view of the most beautiful sunrise! Words honestly cannot do this place justice! It was a magical experience and one of the best things to do in the Philippines.

While their presence may seem unusual, the pigs have become accustomed to beachgoers and happily coexist with visitors soaking up the sun.

38. The Underground River

Perhaps the most renowned of all things to do in Puerto Princesa is to visit the Underground River! This extraordinary location is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognised as one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature!

Entrance To The Underground River.

You can embark on a guided boat tour through the subterranean river system, which stretches 8.2 kilometres into the limestone landscape. However, tours only usually visit the first 1.5 kilometres due to the time it takes to sail the entire river. That being said, 1.5 kilometres is more than enough to truly appreciate how remarkable the underground river is, with hollow chambers reaching over 100m high; this otherworldly site is an underground labyrinth.

Exiting The Underground River

One of the most unique aspects of the tour is the requirement for complete silence during the boat ride. This rule, aimed at preserving the delicate ecosystem, allows visitors to fully appreciate the grandeur and otherworldliness of the interior of this huge cave system. The sheer size and beauty of this destination are beyond words; it is truly a sight that will leave you in awe. It was one of our favorite destinations and definitely one of the best things to do in The Philippines!

Underground River

You are provided with a headset that talks you through each location throughout the journey. The audio is fascinating and a lovely touch, as the guides also cannot speak inside the cave system.

Underground River Palawan

If you only need one reason to stay in Puerto Princesa for a day, this should be it! We cannot recommend it enough!

To visit this site, you have to book a guided tour. Visitors can only enter with a guide to protect the delicate ecosystem. Here are our top suggestions for tours to the Underground River. We have included group and private tour options depending on your budget and preference:

39. Iwahig Prison

Iwahig Prison, also known as the “Prison Without Walls,” is a unique and unconventional penal facility that offers a fascinating glimpse into an alternative approach to incarceration and rehabilitation. Spanning a vast 64,000 acres, twice the size of Paris, this open-air prison allows inmates to roam freely across the sprawling grounds, which include rice paddies, coconut plantations, and even a town square with a church and recreation centre.

Iwahig Prison

Incredibly, some prisoners are allowed to live with their families, and there is even a school on site! Rather than being confined behind bars, the prisoners of Iwahig are given the opportunity to learn valuable skills through farming, handicrafts, and even performing dances for visitors. The dancers call them selves the prison backstreet boys, and it was an hilarious experience to dance with them.

Iwahig Prison Dancers

You also get the opportunity to ask the prisoners about their stories and why they ended up incarcerated. This is particularly interesting, especially for those interested in true crime. However, it also provides a unique understanding of the drastic differences in prisons throughout the Philippines and an insight into Filipino culture and law.

While the concept of an open prison may seem unconventional, we think this experience is one of the best things to do in the Philippines. Iwahig offers a thought-provoking perspective on rehabilitation, allowing inmates to maintain a semblance of freedom and dignity while preparing for their eventual reintegration into society.

If you want to check out this unique spot, you can have a look at this Puerto Princesa City Tour with Trip Advisor! This tour includes visiting Iwahig Prison and other top things to do in Puerto Princesa!

The google pin is the same as the butterfly garden as they are essentially the same location. One entrance ticket should cover both activities but check on the day or with your tour provider!
