Avoid Those Pesky Mosquitos
Nothing ruins a Philippines sunset like being on the menu for mosquitoes, and Filipino mosquitos are no joke! Fortunately, there are several ways to keep the pesky bloodsuckers at bay. Here are our top recommendations for your Philippines packing list to keep you off the mosquito menu:
The Best Mosquito Repellent
Finding a mosquito repellant that actually works is no easy task! Trek is fantastic for us, and we highly recommend it! However, it’s worth noting that Trek does contain Deet. So, if you are sensitive to Deet, this might not be the one for you, but it’s one of the only things that works for us! Regardless of brand, mosquito repellant is at the top of the packing list for any tropical trip to allow you to roam freely without those pesky bloodsuckers crashing the party!
Mosquito Repellent Wall Plug
Another recommendation for your Philippines packing list is a mosquito-repellent wall plug-in. These devices emit a steady flow of insect repellent, typically containing ingredients like citronella or eucalyptus, which can effectively deter mosquitoes from entering your living space. Unlike topical repellents, wall plug-ins provide continuous protection without the need for reapplication. You simply plug them into an electrical outlet and let them work their magic. They are affordable and super small, so they definitely make it onto our packing list. Here is our recommendation:
Mosquito Net
A mosquito net is a great companion for travellers exploring the Philippines, especially if camping is on the agenda. These lightweight and portable nets provide a protective barrier against mosquitoes and other insects. Whether you’re camping under the stars in the lush rainforests of Palawan or cosying up in a rustic beachside bungalow, a mosquito net offers reliable defence against pesky bugs. Plus, setting up a mosquito net is quick and easy, and they pack down super small for your travel days!
Mosquito Anti-Itch Plasters
We have yet to try these, but we have heard really good things, and they have great reviews, so they have made it onto the Philippines packing list. Mosquito anti-itch plasters reportedly offer quick and effective relief from the itch, swelling and redness caused by mosquito bites. By applying a plaster directly to the affected area, you can provide targeted relief and minimise the urge to scratch. Additionally, mosquito anti-itch plasters are compact and easy to carry, making them ideal for travel. If you do try them, we would love to know what you think in the comments!
Disclaimer: Please note that these plasters state they do not contain any medicines. We are not medically trained and do not offer medical advice; use these at your own risk. Likewise, always check the ingredients and materials to ensure you do not have any allergies before use.

Top Tips To Avoid Being Stuck On The Loo
One of the common concerns for travellers is the risk of encountering a “bad belly” due to consuming contaminated water or food. While we have yet to personally experience this in the Philippines, preparing is essential!
To avoid the toilet rush, here are some top tips:
- Avoid Tap Water: Stick to bottled water or water that has been adequately purified to prevent consuming harmful bacteria. In some parts of the Philippines, particularly in rural areas or areas with inadequate sanitation infrastructure, the water may contain contaminants such as bacteria, parasites, and viruses, which can pose a risk of gastrointestinal illnesses for travellers. You may see locals drinking tap water, but this is because their bodies have adjusted! It is still advisable for all travellers to avoid tap water.
- Don’t Brush Your Teeth With Tap Water: Although we both do not typically follow this tip and have always been fine, if you want to be extra safe, brush your teeth with bottled water as well! And avoid ingesting any water in the shower.
- Wash Your Hands Frequently: This one goes without saying, but be sure to wash your hands with soap and water before handling food or eating.
- Be Cautious with Ice: This one can catch people out! Be aware that ice could be made from tap water. Always ask when you buy drinks and purchase from reputable establishments.
- Watch What You Eat: Be cautious of foods that may have been prepared in tap water, such as salads and raw seafood.
- Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids, preferably bottled water, to stay hydrated!
- Use Precautions with Alcohol: This one might be tough to hear for some Brits 😉, but as we know, too much alcohol can exacerbate digestive issues. Drink sensibly, and don’t be afraid to have a few glasses of water between the beers. Also, be mindful that liquor can be very, very strong abroad, especially if made locally. If in doubt, ask for branded spirits rather than house spirits.
- Pack Medications: Consider bringing over-the-counter medications like pain relief, diarrhoea medication and rehydration salts to manage symptoms if they occur. We will not recommend specific medicines in this article as we are not medical professionals. Still, these are points worth considering before your trip! Always consult a healthcare professional before taking any medication.
Here are some essential items for your Philippines packing list to help you avoid and/or manage Travelers bad belly:
Travel Water Bottle With Filter
This bottle automatically filters your water and adds an additional layer of protection and some peace of mind! However, you should still always fill this with bottled water to be extra safe!
Pocket Tissues
This one may seem silly, but we promise you will Thank us later! Many, many toilets in the Philippines do not have a Loo roll! Pocket tissues are the essential item you did not know you needed 😉
Pocket Size Hand Sanitiser
For the same reason above, hand sanitiser can be helpful! Toilets in Asia are not always the same as back home… you may encounter a hole in the ground without a sink or soap. A solid squat and some hand sanitiser goes a long way 😉

Travel Sickness Glasses
These bad boys are an absolute game changer if you get travel sick!! We’ll be honest, initially, we did not think they would work, but… for Beth (who really feels the sea and the road), they genuinely work! These work a bit like a spirit level to even out your horizon! Admittedly… they are not the most fashionable haha! However, for how well they work, that is a small price to pay, in our opinion, and they always make for a good conversation starter with fellow travellers!
These also make it into our collection of ways to help manage a lousy belly because, honestly, if you already feel sick and need to keep travelling (which happens), then every little helps!

Essential Health & Safety Items For Your Philippines Packing List
The Philippines is absolutely breathtaking and promises unforgettable experiences, however, like any tropical country it comes with certain considerations for your health and safety along the way. Here are some essential items for your Philippines packing list to keep you patched up and ready for adventure.
A First Aid Kit
A first aid kit is a packing essential and can help you patch up lots of minor cuts/ grazes, amongst other things! This example is quite a large kit but there are plenty of different size options for you to choose from.
Reef Safe Sun Screen
The sun in the Philippines is no joke! Protecting your skin is essential, especially in the water, where you may not feel the heat as intensely! Using reef-safe sunscreen offers numerous benefits for both the user and for Marine life. Traditional sunscreens often contain chemicals such as octinoxate and oxybenzone, which could potentially cause coral bleaching and harm marine life.
Reef-safe sunscreens, on the other hand, are formulated with ingredients that are less harmful to coral reefs and aquatic ecosystems. Additionally, reef-safe sunscreens are often gentler on the skin, especially for those with sensitive skin or allergies. Here is our top pick.

Essential Items For A Good Nights Sleep
If you are anything like us you love the social aspect of staying in hostels and the Philippines has some of the best! However, you may also love a good nights sleep! We get it! Here are some perfect items to ensure you get the best of both worlds:
Loop Ear Plugs
Loop earplugs are your ultimate travel companion for catching Z’s on buses, planes, and bustling hostel dorms! Say goodbye to noisy neighbors and that pesky engine hum. With Loop, you can enjoy the blissful benefits of uninterrupted sleep, ensuring you are refreshed and ready to conquer the day. We swear by them!
Blackout Eye Mask
A blackout sleep mask is another top recommendation for your Philippines packing list. This is a game-changer for travelers bunking in hostel dorms and for long plane/ bus journeys. With its ability to block out light completely, it creates a dark and conducive environment for a restful sleep, regardless of the time of day. In a shared dormitory where lights may be on at odd hours, a sleep mask ensures you can catch those much-needed Z’s without disturbances. Its compact size also makes it a convenient addition to any travel kit, offering portability without compromising comfort. Say hello to a rejuvenating night’s sleep, no matter where your adventures take you!
Travel Pillow
There are so many amazing islands to see in the Philippines, therefore, getting a good kip on travel days between islands is important. The Trtl travel pillow takes sleep on the go to another level… especially if you are not near a window where you can rest your head on a more typical travel pillow. This pillow works by supporting your neck and head in a more upright position, allowing for better sleep and reducing neck stiffness. However, it is on the pricier side, so remember to always purchase within your budget.
Carrying All Your Belongings
Backpack
With plenty of compartments and pockets to store essentials, a travel backpack keeps everything organised and accessible. Whether you’re trekking through bustling cities or hiking remote trails, a good all-purpose travel backpack allows for streamlined, hands-free travel and enables you to explore with ease! We have linked our favourite, which we think is excellent value, but there are many options to choose from!
Additionally, a waterproof backpack is ideal for any outdoor adventures in a tropical country! We also use this water resistant back pack for longer motorbike trips!
